Originally a small fisherman's village located on the north coast of the Samana peninsula, las Terrenas has become today a favorite destination for tourism in the Dominican republic.
Las Terrenas offers miles of white sand beaches, all pristine and well protected. This town of 18,000 inhabitants, ideally situated in a tropical paradise has a very active economy. Although fishing remains a strong contributor to the local economy, the success of tourism has enabled the creation and development of a wide range of businesses and activities.
Las terrenas enjoys an ideal weather all year long, thanks to its warm subtropical temperature, tempered by a small breeze. Furthermore, rainfalls are moderate without the typical tropical downpours found in other tropical areas.
When Christopher Colombus explored the Samana peninsula, he named it "the prettiest land of the world". The peninsula is now known as the Jewel of the island.
Tourists from Europe and North America re-discovered Samana at the end of the 70's, shaping the modern las Terrenas, a multi-cultural city offering dozens of hotels and resorts, international restaurants, bars, shops, Internet cafes, supermarkets, and much more. The foreign residents (now mostly European) account for approximately 5,000. While the official language is Spanish, the visitor will be surprised to hear many other languages, mostly English, French, German, Italian, and Dutch.
